The Perfect Venue: Grand Hotel Riviera Sorrento
If you’ve ever visited Sorrento, you’ll understand why it’s often described as the perfect wedding destination. With the shimmering blue of the Mediterranean stretching out behind you, the scent of lemon groves in the air, and the timeless charm of the Italian coastline, it’s easy to see how the location alone could make any wedding feel magical.
But for Dan and Jonny, stunning views and beautiful weather weren’t enough — they wanted a day that everyone would remember for years to come. Perhaps it was their eye for detail, or maybe just a great excuse for a few extra planning trips to Sorrento, but this wedding had it all: a breathtaking venue overlooking the sea (the Grand Hotel Riviera), a free-flowing bar, incredible canapés, and live music throughout the day. And the friends and family who made the journey brought an amazing energy that truly made the celebration come alive.
A Relaxed Start: Sunshine, Sea, and a Pre-Ceremony Swim
On the big day, Sorrento delivered with glorious sunshine and clear skies. Guests began arriving at 11:30 for a midday ceremony, welcomed with water and fans — because as much as the English love hot weather, a little cooling off goes a long way! Meanwhile, Dan and Jonny were doing what any sensible couple would: enjoying a refreshing swim in the sea before the festivities began.
As guests gathered on the rooftop terrace — this was the Grand Hotel Riviera’s first rooftop wedding, which added to the excitement — the anticipation built. When Dan and Jonny made their entrance, they were met with smiles, applause, and a sea of emotion. The ceremony was beautiful, with the couple exchanging traditional vows and performing a sand-blending ritual to symbolise their union.
Food, Drink, and Live Music
With the formalities complete, confetti filled the air, the bar opened, and the party truly began. A talented sax player provided the perfect soundtrack as guests mingled, soaked up the sun, and admired the incredible views.
The wedding breakfast didn’t disappoint. A delicious four-course meal was served, the atmosphere was full of energy, the drinks flowed freely, and the food was simply outstanding. As with any good wedding meal, the next big moment arrived: the speeches. Jonny’s brothers, a little nervous perhaps, delivered heartfelt and hilarious speeches that had everyone — including the top table — in fits of laughter, all without crossing the line into too much embarrassment.
Stunning Portraits and an Epic Cake-Cutting Moment
After the speeches, we made the most of the golden light for some couple portraits. Dan and Jonny were relaxed, happy, and completely at ease with each other, making it a joy to capture those special moments.
Then came the cake cut — often a quiet tradition in the UK, but in Sorrento, it’s a real highlight. And this was no ordinary cake. Out came what felt like the world’s biggest wedding cake, and just as the knife hit the icing, fireworks lit up the sky — without a doubt, the most epic cake-cutting moment I’ve ever witnessed.
Dancing the Night Away
With the formalities done, the party really took off. The dance floor was packed, the drinks kept flowing, and the energy was incredible. It was the perfect ending to a spectacular day — a wedding in Sorrento that truly had it all.
Tips for Planning a Wedding in Sorrento
If you’re dreaming of getting married in Sorrento, here are a few tips from Dan and Jonny’s incredible day:
✅ Choose a venue with a view. The Grand Hotel Riviera’s rooftop terrace made the day feel magical — there’s nothing quite like those sea views.
✅ Consider the heat. Midday sun in Italy can be intense, so plan for shade, fans, and refreshments for your guests.
✅ Make it an experience. From live music to fireworks, little extras help make your day unforgettable.
✅ Take time for yourselves. A pre-ceremony swim or quiet moment together can ease the nerves and help you soak it all in.
✅ Enjoy the local food and drink. Sorrento’s cuisine is incredible — embrace it and give your guests a true taste of Italy.
